What is a Hero and How Can We Help Our Community

The second grade has had the opportunity to take two amazing field trips.  Both of them helped reinforce the concept of being a member of a community, citizenship, and what real heroes look like.

We were able to walk to St. Luke's to tour the hospital, the helicopter pad, and an ambulance.  The students enjoyed seeing how paramedics, doctors, nurses, administration, pilots, etc., etc., etc. all pitch in to make a community hospital work.

We also went to the courthouse.  Students toured the old courthouse, sat in a real courtroom while a judge spoke to them, and visited with a police officer who told them all about helping in the community and being a hero.  At the end, students were able to see a presentation of one of the police dogs.  We had the best time.

Thank you so much to St. Lukes, the Twin Falls Police Department, Officer Mencl, the County Courthouse  (all of the employees at the courthouse were so great to work with), Judge Kershaw, and Julie Sturgill (city prosecutor).  Our kids had some great experiences and made memories that we hope will encourage them to be the best member of our community that they can be.

Fire Safety

The second grade had their final fire safety presentation.  We reviewed all of the important rules and tips we learned over the year and we learned a few new things.

We discussed the importance of not playing with matches.

We talked about different types of poisons, and how students should not get into poisons that they find at home.

This presentation was really fun because we were taught by puppets.
Firefighter Dave taught us to stay away from pills that don't belong to us.

Those puppets sure knew a lot about fire safety.

The kids sang a familiar song with the puppets and firemen at the end.

We appreciate the Twin Falls Fire Department and Firefighter Dave for working so hard all year long to make sure that our kids stay safe!

Field Trip to the Planetarium

We had a great time at the planetarium.  Students were able to walk through the museum.  You would be proud to know that they were on their best behavior.  After the museum, we went into the planetarium.  We viewed "Perfect Little World," where we learned about the planets and the sun.  An alien family was trying to find a place to vacation.  In the end, it was decided that Earth would make the best vacation place.  It was a fun fieldtrip.

Don't forget that this week is parent/student/teacher conferences.  If you are unsure of what time your conference is, please contact your child's teacher.

Also, please remember that due to conferences, there is no school Thursday or Friday.  Next week, March 23-27, is spring break.  Enjoy!

Fire Safety

We had our third installment of fire safety today.  Firefighter Dave came and talked to us about emergencies that would make it necessary to call 9-1-1.  He had several people come up and practice dialing 9-1-1.  They practiced how to dial and what to say.  It was interesting to see that many of the kids did not know how to use a landline type telephone.  When he showed them the rotary phone...their minds were blown.

We are grateful to Firefighter Dave for coming.  He always teaches such great lessons.
The kids love him.

One thing he talked about was the importance of knowing your phone number and address.  There were many kids who did not.  If you have some extra time this weekend, maybe work with your child on memorizing these things.  It may save someone's life.
